The Red Rebels are holding a vigil outside the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) every Thursday from 12 to 1 PM, and you're welcome to join them!
The vigil, which began on June 5 and will continue until August 28, is a silent protest highlighting the Canada Pension Plan's continued $23 billion investment in fossil fuels and its role in worsening the climate crisis despite its February 2022 pledge to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The protest comes in response to a significant shift in the CPPIB's reporting practices. On May 21, 2025, the CPPIB discreetly removed its net-zero climate target from its latest annual report. This change occurred without any public explanation or announcement, causing concern among environmental advocates.
The elimination of the net-zero climate target is viewed as a significant regression from the CPPIB's earlier climate commitments. The Red Rebels strive to bring public awareness to this issue and advocate for a return to more sustainable investment strategies. Their vigil is one of many strategies to inform and support Canadians in their efforts to combat climate change, and they encourage you to stand with them in peaceful protest if you are able.
